Huge turnout for New York briefing on LDC report 26 Mar -
Large numbers of delegates from least developed countries (LDCs) and civil society organizations gathered at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 19 March to hear a detailed briefing on the Least Developed Countries Report 2012 - Harnessing Remittances and Diaspora Knowledge to Build Productive Capacities, which was presented by Mr. Taffere Tesfachew, Director of UNCTAD's Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes.
Ambassador of Kazakhstan assumes Presidency of Trade and Development Board 22 Mar -
At the twenty-seventh special session of the Trade and Development Board held today, Ambassador Jüri Seilenthal (Estonia) handed over the Presidency of the Board to Ambassador Mukhtar Tileuberdi (Kazakhstan) for the remainder of the one-year term. Following the handover, Ambassador Seilenthal assumed the function of Vice-President, which had just been vacated by Ambassador Tileuberdi.
World commercial services exports grew by 3% in the fourth quarter of 2012 22 Mar -
According to preliminary estimates by the WTO and UNCTAD, in the fourth quarter of 2012, world exports of commercial services grew by 3 %, as compared with the same quarter of the year before. The estimates point to a modest, but certain recovery of global services trade at the end of the year, after 2% decline recorded in the third quarter. Preliminary figures (balance-of-payments basis, current prices) indicate that the observed growth was led by Asia and Oceania (8%) and Northern America (5%). At the same time, Europe's services exports remained stagnant, at the level of exports recorded for the last 3 months of 2011.
UNCTAD launches Trade and Development Strategy for Comoros 21 Mar -
The strategy, developed in partnership with the Government of Comoros, focuses on achieving food self-sufficiency, improving the country's access to international markets, and finding the Comoros' place in regional markets.
