Advancing on Non-Tariff Measures and Voluntary Sustainability Standards

UNCTAD Youth Network

The ability to gain and to benefit from market access opportunities depends increasingly on compliance with non-tariff measures (NTMs), such as sanitary and phytosanitary measures and technical regulations and norms. Although many NTMs have primarily non-trade objectives — such as the protection of public health or the environment — with falling tariffs, they have become the more important impediment to trade.

The NTMs Week sheds light on the importance of mandatory trade-related regulations and Voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) on international trade and development, and shows successful global, regional and national approaches to tackle the challenges including transparency initiatives and regulatory cooperation.

The meeting will also review and revise the International Classification on NTMs by the Multi-Agency Support Team (MAST).
