Launch of the National Platform on Private Sustainability Standards of India

18 March 2016
10:00 - 07:00 hrs. Viceroy Hall, The Claridges
New Delhi
, India

Private Sustainability Standards (PSS) on environmental, social, economic and ethical issues of production are of increasing importance in international trade and international supply chains. Unless proactively addressed, they can become serious trade and investment hurdles for businesses.

With a view to facilitating a dialogue on a regular basis within a core group of public and private stakeholders, the Quality Council of India (QCI) launches the National Platform on Private Sustainability Standards - a demand-driven, national public-private partnership initiative - in collaboration with the United Nations Forum on Sustainability Standards (UNFSS) - an initiative of 5 UN agencies (FAO, ITC, UNCTAD, UNEP and UNIDO).

The launching of the National Platform will bring together key public and private Indian stakeholders to:

  1. discuss the key opportunities and challenges related to private sustainability standards for export and national use;
  2. identify the key sectors and commodity groups, in which the effective use of private sustainability standards is most urgent, commercially promising and developmentally beneficial;
  3. inform on national business initiatives, with which the National Platform could constructively link; and
  4. exchange proposals on the roadmap of and the initial activities to be undertaken by the National Platform.
