Launch of the International Food Policy Research Institute’s 2016 Global Food Policy Report, hosted by UNCTAD

12 April 2016
10:30-12:00 hrs., Room XXIII, Palais des Nations
Geneva
, Switzerland

In 2015, the global community made major commitments on sustainable development and climate change. The global food system lies at the heart of those commitments – and we will only be able to meet the new Sustainable Development Goals if we work to transform our food system to be more inclusive, climate-smart, sustainable, efficient, nutrition- and health-driven and business-friendly.

The International Food Policy Research Institute’s 2016 Global Food Policy Report examines major food policy issues, global and regional developments, and commitments made in 2015, and presents data on key food policy indicators. The report also proposes key policy options for 2016 and beyond to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Zero Hunger Challenge.

Questions to be addressed:

  • How can we support the critical contributions of smallholders to food security in a world facing climate change?

  • What are the causes and costs of food loss and waste within food systems, and how can this loss be reduced?

  • How can sound management of water resources and food systems provide multiple benefits for health, nutrition and sustainability?

  • What policy choices can best promote sustainable management of agricultural land and soil resources and the ecosystem services they provide?

  • Where are the most promising opportunities for exploiting synergies between green energy and food security goals?

  • What changes in global diets can make the greatest contribution to food security and sustainability?

  • How can we use food value chains to develop effective interventions to achieve both better nutrition and sustainability?
