Statistical Capacity Building for Sustainable Development:
Developing the fundamental pillars necessary for modern national statistical systems
by
Steve MacFeely and Nour Barnat (UNCTAD)

2017-04-06_Stats_400x199.jpgThis seminar will address the data requirements of the Sustainable Development Goals monitoring framework, arguing that to prioritize them over the development of national statistical systems might be a mistake.

Countries should instead target flexible and responsive national statistical systems that can satisfy both national and Goals-related policy requirements.

The seminar will outline the following three pillars necessary for a modern national statistical system: legal framework; institutional coordination; and national data infrastructure.

Without these core pillars, countries will not have access to policy information appropriate to a data-driven world. Nor will they be able to meet the data demands of the Goals monitoring framework.

Objective

The UNCTAD Research Seminar Series provides a platform for staff to present their work, receive feedback from colleagues, and gain exposure to research taking place outside the house that is relevant for UNCTAD and its mandate.

Who may attend?

The seminar is open to everyone.

Invitees not in possession of a United Nations badge should register by sending an e-mail to: SeminarsResearchUNCTAD@unctad.org at least two days before the seminar.
