Introduction to the Course on Digital Commerce and Emerging Technologies

18 April 2018
10:30 - 12:00 hrs. Room XXV
Geneva
, Switzerland

Digital commerce is becoming increasingly prominent in multilateral discussions and negotiations. As a consequence, permanent missions need to fine-tune their interdisciplinary understanding of the issue from both digital and trade perspectives. This is particularly true for many developing and least developed countries (LDCs), as they often have not yet adopted related policies at home and are still trying to identify their interests in such discussions.

To support developing countries and LDCs at this critical time, DiploFoundation, UNCTAD, ITC, CUTS International Geneva, and the Geneva Internet Platform (GIP) are offering an introduction to a course on digital commerce and emerging technologies during the UNCTAD E-commerce Week. This short introduction is based on the online course on digital commerce developed by the partner organisations and delivered three times during 2017 and 2018.

The online course offers an overview of key topics relevant to digital commerce such as:
(i) Internet functionality and online business models;
(ii) relevant economic policy issues, such as taxation, e-payments, virtual currencies, and competition;
(iii) regional and multilateral trade negotiations and agreements;
(iv) digital policy issues of relevance to e-commerce, such as cybersecurity, data protection, cross-border data transfers, and data localization
(v) the impact of emerging technologies, such as big data, Internet of things and 3D printing on e-commmerce.
This introductory session will offer an overview of some of these topics.

Breakfast will be available from 8:15 am.
