Training Course on Information Economy Statistics for the CIS countries

08 - 12 December 2014
Holiday Inn Almaty
Almaty
, Kazakhstan

The training will be delivered to staff of national statistical offices (NSOs) and other institutions in charge of the production of official statistics on the information economy from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Participants are expected from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan and Ukraine.

The objective of the regional workshop for CIS countries is to strengthen their capacity to produce national statistics and indicators on information and communication technologies (ICTs). Since 2004, as part of its activities as a leading member of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development, UNCTAD has been working with NSOs on harmonizing and collecting official statistical indicators on the information economy.

These include indicators on the use of ICT by enterprises, on the value added and employment of the ICT productive sector, and on international trade in ICT goods.

The information economy includes industries such as telecommunications, software publishing, and the manufacture of computers and communication equipment.

Although ICT has recently been identified as a sector with significant development potential for the region, official statistics on the information economy are available for only 20 to 50 per cent of the CIS countries, depending on the indicator. UNCTAD collects annually information economy statistics from NSOs and publishes them in its UNCTADStat portal.

The training is based on the UNCTAD "Manual for the Production of Statistics on the Information Economy" recently translated into Russian.

The course is organized by UNCTAD with the financial support of the Government of Sweden.
