Workshop for Afghan trade officials on WTO accession-related issues
19 - 27 May 2008
Palais des Nations

Key Issues

In the context of its assistance to countries acceding to the WTO, UNCTAD is organizing a 10-day training workshop for the negotiating team of Afghanistan.

The workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive overview of the main subjects negotiated at the multilateral level.

Issues to be addressed:

  • The Doha Work Programm

  • The WTO accession process

  • Negotiations on agricultural trade; non-agriculture market access (NAMA); sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures; and technical barriers to trade (TBT)

  • The state of play of services negotiations

  • Intellectual Property Rights in the multilateral trading system

The presentations will be complemented by a negotiation simulation exercise on construction services; a presentation on negotiating skills and techniques; and visits to WTO, ITC and WIPO.

This activity is part of a broader assistance programme to help Afghan authorities in the long process towards WTO accession. Its purpose is to assist Afghanistan to enter the WTO on terms consistent with its LDC status.
