Notification

[dated 19 april 2010]

United Nations Cocoa Conference postponed to 21-25 June 2010

At its opening plenary on 19 April, the United Nations Cocoa Conference elected H.E. Ambassador Guy-Alain Emmanuel Gauze (Côte d´Ivoire) as the President and Mr. Max Schnellmann (Switzerland) as Vice-President of the Conference.

It was also agreed that the negotiating Conference, scheduled to take place from 19 to 23 April, would be postponed to 21–25 June 2010 because numerous government representatives from cocoa producing and consuming countries were unable to attend due to the cancellation of flights into Geneva resulting from the volcanic eruption in Iceland.

The Conference is scheduled to reopen at 10 a.m. on Monday, 21 June, in room XXVI of the Palais des Nations, Geneva.

The Conference is being held for the purpose of negotiating a successor agreement to the International Cocoa Agreement, 2001.

The provisional agenda has been circulated as document TD/COCOA.10/1 and the provisional rules of procedure as document TD/COCOA.10/2. A draft text of a new agreement prepared by the International Cocoa Council has been circulated under the symbols TD/COCOA.10/R.1, TD/COCOA.10/R.1/Corr.1 and TD/COCOA.10/R.1/Add.1.

Members of UNCTAD that wish to participate in the Conference are requested to submit to the UNCTAD secretariat by 8 June 2010 the credentials of their representatives and the names of alternate representatives and advisers.

Specialized agencies and international organizations that wish to participate in the Conference as observers are also requested to inform the UNCTAD secretariat by 8 June 2010 of the names of their representatives.

Participants who have already filled in a registration form to attend the Cocoa Conference originally scheduled for 19 to 23 April 2010, do not need to resubmit this form.

All communications concerning representation at the Conference should be sent to the UNCTAD secretariat, Intergovernmental Support Services, Palais des Nations, CH-1211 Geneva 10, fax: +41 22 917 0214; e-mail: meetings@unctad.org.
