Key Issues

In the context of the current food crisis, the Food and Agriculture Organization or the United Nations (FAO) organized a expert workshop to review:

  • The reasons behind food price increases

  • The impact of the crisis on developing countries´ economies

  • possible solutions

The meeting was organized for the various stakeholders of the agricultural sector.

UNCTAD contributed to the discussions with a focus on the role played by the multilateral trading system, and in particular:

  • The impact of WTO provisions on food prices

  • How can the multilateral trading system help to solve the crisis

  • Recommendations for future action
