UNCTAD Secretary-General´s Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on Trade and Development issues relating to Coffee
08 April 2009
Room XXVI, Palais des Nations

Key Issues

The 12th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, held in Accra, Ghana, in April 2008, mandated UNCTAD to continue to play a key role in addressing the trade and development problems associated with the commodity economy, paying due attention to all commodity sectors, and to do so in coordination with other international and regional actors, including relevant international commodity bodies.

The Conference also stipulated that the UNCTAD secretariat, under the guidance and leadership of the Secretary-General of UNCTAD, should contribute more effectively to developing countries´ efforts to formulate strategies and policies to respond to the challenges and opportunities of commodity markets.

The purpose of the meeting is twofold:

  • To review the opportunities and challenges for trade in coffee in the evolving global economic and trade environment.

  • To identify ways in which low-income coffee-dependent developing countries can be assisted to respond to the challenges and opportunities of commodity markets, thereby enhancing the sector´s contribution to poverty reduction, economic growth and development.

This one day consultative meeting on Coffee will be held back-to-back with the Multi-year Expert Meeting on Commodities and Development (6-7 April 2009)
