Workshop on Promoting Sub-regional Growth-Oriented Trade Policies in Arab Countries

Key Issues

The workshop is part of the activities of UNCTAD regional project on "Promoting sub-regional growth-oriented economic and trade policies towards achieving the MDGs in selected Arab countries".

The project covers Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Sudan and Morocco and responds to Millennium Development Goals 1 and 8: the eradication of hunger and fostering a global partnership for development.

The project and the workshop seek to assist these economies in achieving successful regional (Arab) integration, enhancing their trade policy-making capacities, fostering cooperation among them, and strengthening their statistical capacities to provide data for trade policymaking.

The workshop will be opened by H. E. Mr. Rachid Mohamed Rachid, Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry (or his representative)

Presentations will be made by:

  • H. E. Ambassador Ibrahim Khraishi, Permanent Observer for Palestine to the United Nations Office at Geneva

  • Dr. Heiner Flassbeck, Director, Division on Globalization and Development Strategies, UNCTAD

  • Dr. Mahmoud Elkhafif, Coordinator, Assistance to the Palestinian People, UNCTAD

The workshop will review six papers prepared by national and international experts on trade policy, growth, unemployment, and regional integration as well as presentations by senior staff from the League of Arab States, and the Egyptian Ministry of Industry and Trade.
