The workshop is part of the activities of UNCTAD sub-regional project on "Promoting sub-regional growth-oriented economic and trade policies towards achieving the MDGs in selected Arab countries".
The project covers Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Sudan and Morocco and responds to Millennium Development Goals 1 and 8: the eradication of hunger and fostering a global partnership for development.
The project and the workshop seek to assist these economies in achieving successful regional (Arab) integration, enhancing their trade policy-making capacities, fostering cooperation among them, and strengthening their capacities to provide statistical data for trade policymaking.
The workshop will be opened by Dr. Mahmoud Elkhafif, Coordinator, Assistance to the Palestinian People, UNCTAD, and the keynote speech will be delivered by H. E. Mr. Omar Hilale, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations in Geneva.
The workshop discusses the outcomes of five country studies conducted by the project´s national and international experts on trade policy, growth, unemployment, poverty and regional Arab integration, as well as presentations by senior staff from UNCTAD, ESCWA, and the statistical agencies of the participating economies.
The workshop will place a much-needed emphasis on the availability, reliability and role of trade statistics in economic policy-making.
The workshop will be attended by the project consultants and a selected number of official invitees from the participating countries.
