As part of its trade related technical assistance and capacity building activities to support Syria´s efforts to join the WTO, UNCTAD will organise a workshop on Services for 18 experts and trade officials from the main Syrian ministries and institutions: Trade; Health; Education; Housing; Social Affairs and Labour; Tourism; Transports; Energy; Central Bank; insurance; investment; export promotion; and communications & technologies.
The Syrian delegation, which includes 10 women, is headed by the assistant Trade Minister.
UNCTAD has provided financial support to 10 participants under its Trust Fund for WTO accessions. UNDP/Syria bore the cost of the remaining participants.
The work programme involves presentations on negotiations under GATS and topics related to the Services accession negotiations as well as a simulation exercise on the preparation of an initial offer for market access on trade in services.
Experts representing some Geneva based organisations including: ITU and WTO and selected acceding and recently acceded countries are invited to share experiences and lessons learnt from their negotiating processes, in the area of trade in services in sectors with particular interest to Syria´s Economy.
