The third session of the Commission on Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities will be held from 28 September to 2 October 1998. The session will open at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, at 10 a.m. on Monday, 28 September 1998.
As mandated by UNCTAD IX, the Commission will deal with areas identified in paragraph 91 (i)-(ii) and (v) of "A Partnership for Growth and Development" (TD/378/Rev.1), namely: (a) Ways and means of enhancing the utilization of trade preferences by developing countries, in particular LDCs, as well as further ways of expanding preferences; (b) Scope for expanding exports of developing countries in specific services sectors through all GATS modes of supply, taking into account their interrelationship, the role of information technology and new business practices. The agenda and annotations for the session, as approved by the Commission at its second session (17 - 21 November 1997), will be circulated in TD/B/COM.1/19. The annotations provide information on the objectives and scope of the examinations of the two substantive agenda items to be carried out by the Commission and indicate the supporting documents prepared by the UNCTAD secretariat.
Membership of the Commission is open to all States members of UNCTAD. States members of UNCTAD wishing to attend the session are requested to provide the Secretary-General of UNCTAD with the credentials of their representatives and the names of their alternate representatives and advisers by 11 September 1998. Other participants (i.e. the specialized agencies and intergovernmental bodies, as well as non-governmental organizations in the General and Special Categories wishing to participate as observers) are requested to indicate the names of their representatives by the same date.
