Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes
ALDC Landing

In support of UNCTAD's vision of "Prosperity for All", the Division focuses its initiatives on the poorest and most vulnerable developing countries in the world.

The Division aims to address development challenges in Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), as well as in countries with specific geographical barriers, notably Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Division offers targeted, analytically-sound policy recommendations and technical assistance to foster inclusive and sustainable development, aligning its work with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Division conducts evidenced-based research and policy development; publishes flagship reports including the Least Developed Countries Report, and the Economic Development in Africa Report; produces UN-mandated Vulnerability Profiles, tracks progress towards graduation, and prepares smooth transition strategies for LDCs; provides tailor-made and demand-driven technical assistance programmes; supports and facilitates intergovernmental consensus building and coordinates UNCTAD's work on Africa, LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS.
