Second African Organic Conference: Mainstreaming organic agriculture in the African development agenda

02 - 04 May 2012
Lusaka, Zambia
, Zambia

UNCTAD and its partners are holding the second African Organic Conference in Lusaka, Zambia, from 2 to 4 May 2012.

The Conference provides a platform for public-private sector dialogue and south-south and triangular cooperation on "mainstreaming organic agriculture in the African development agenda". Topics addressed range from organic policies and action plans, private sector initiatives, research and options for cooperation on organic standards in Africa. An information circular is attached.

This Conference builds upon the momentum and network created by the first African Organic Conference, co-organized by UNCTAD in Kampala, Uganda in May 2009. The third one should take place in 2015.

The conference partners have identified and been in contact with a number of key individuals and institutions interested in organic agriculture in Africa. Yet there are many more that we would like to reach, and we would be grateful for your assistance in bringing the Conference to the attention of the relevant public and private sector bodies in your countries.

Interested parties are invited to contact the conference organizing committee at the email africanoc2@gmail.com or visit the conference website www.africanorganicconference.com. Within the UNCTAD secretariat Ms. Sophia Twarog will be pleased to answer any enquiries you may have sophia.twarog@unctad.org, tel. +41 22 917 5082.

It is also a pleasure to announce that UNCTAD and organic agriculture in Africa is featured in the March edition (No. 1338) of the United Nations in Action television series. Zanzibar: The Spice Island shows how an increasing number of spice farmers are growing their crops organically. This contributes to sustainable and inclusive development and lifting people out of poverty. These themes will be addressed in the upcoming UNCTAD XIII Conference in Qatar in April and the Rio-20 Earth Summit in Brazil in June.

The UNCTAD-UNTV co-production will be broadcast by United Nations partner television stations worldwide. The English version can be downloaded as follows:
