Collection and Classification of Non-Tariff Measures in Asian and Oceanian Countries Workshop

13 - 15 March 2016
Sheraton Miyako Hotel
Tokyo
, Japan

UNCTAD and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) are embarking on a joint project of collecting NTM data and researching the impact of the NTMs in six Asian and Oceanian countries, namely, Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea. They are close trading partners of ASEAN countries, especially in Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). This is a continuation of the two organizations' regional effort. Recently, UNCTAD and ERIA completed NTM data collection and classification in ten ASEAN member states and the official launch of the data is near at hand. UNCTAD has been actively involved in compiling information of statutory non-tariff measures (NTMs) worldwide.

UNCTAD staff from the Trade Analysis Branch will provide intensive training about the methodology of NTM data collection and classification to government representatives, and national consultants from these countries. Training materials and agenda are built upon the contents of UNCTAD’s NTM online course and with practical case studies resulting from recent experience of NTM data collection and classification in ASEAN countries.

The Collection and Classification of Non-Tariff Measures in Asian and Oceanian Countries is implemented by ERIA and UNCTAD*. The data collection of the "plus 6" countries partly builds and extends on data collected by UNCTAD and the World Bank. Data works for TPP countries have been financially supported by the Global EPAs Research Consortium (secretariat at GRIPS in Japan).

*UNCTAD gratefully acknowledges financial support from GRIPS.
