Gender and Development: Research and Analytics with Reference to Macroeconomics and Trade
by
Elissa Braunstein and Simonetta Zarrilli

This presentation will give an overview of the evolution of gender in economic analyses of development, focusing on two related strands of research: macroeconomics and trade.

The macroeconomy is often perceived as a “gender-neutral” space, but gender matters for macroeconomic structures and outcomes, including trade. Different types of economic shocks or patterns of growth affect women and men differently, as when labor-intensive export orientation raises the relative demand for female labor, or austerity programs end up being disproportionately costly for mothers and children.

This causality also works the other way in that gender relations themselves, as manifested in patterns like low female labor force participation, or gender-biased access to agricultural inputs, partly determine macroeconomic outcomes like growth, investment or inflation.

Looking more closely at the issue of gender and trade, the presentation will also highlight the analytical approach taken and the insights achieved by UNCTAD's extensive work on this issue.
