The side event will help to build consensus on how to best enhance export opportunities for LDCs and SIDS by tapping the potential of their fisheries resources.

This can be done through policies that cover trade, resources management and employment but also through targeted technical assistance and capacity building activities. Drawing on the experience of LDCs and SIDS, national and international experts as well as participants from member States will discuss ways of overcoming the difficulties in exporting fisheries products.

ditc-ted-062017-Oceans-Side-5.jpgParticipants in the event will also have the opportunity to consider how regional integration and cooperation will assist LDCs and SIDS to join value chains.

These value chains are made more accessible by addressing key technical, regulatory and institutional challenges facing the fishery sector, especially in regionally shared water resources. In the experience of many countries, the practice of selling fishing rights is a convenient but not always welfare-maximizing way to benefit from this natural resource.
