Key Issues

The 2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) will convene from 15-19 October 2018, at the Palais des Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The IGF emerged from the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa. Delegates at the WSSD adopted the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, which called for, inter alia, support for “efforts to address the environmental, economic, health and social impacts and benefits of mining, minerals and metals throughout their life cycle, including workers’ health and safety, and use a range of partnerships, furthering existing activities at the national and international levels, among interested governments, intergovernmental organizations, mining companies and workers, and other stakeholders, to promote transparency and accountability for sustainable mining and minerals development.” The WSSD also encouraged governments, civil society and private sector actors to enter into voluntary partnerships focused on sustainable development objectives.

UNCTAD is pleased to host the annual general meeting of the IGF. UNCTAD has been a partner of the Intergovernmental Forum since 2005, when it was officially established in Geneva, and hosts the Intergovernmental Forum’s annual meetings and sits on its Executive Committee.
