Global Gastroeconomy Summit

​UNCTAD participated in the first Global Gastroeconomy Summit hosted by the Turkish Restaurant and Entertainment Association (TURYID) and related meetings in Istanbul, Turkey from 28 to 30 March 2018.  The main theme at the Global Gastroeconomy Summit was "Developing economy with gastronomy."

The Chairman of TURYID Kaya Demirer, noted that "Gastronomy enables domestic tourism and foreign travel to grow, national food products to transform into exported goods and cities to become gastronomy brands.  Also gastronomy is an antidote for global economic crisis."

Gastronomy and economy leaders and visionaries came from all over the world to share their experience and talk about the opportunities in the sector at Global Gastroeconomy Summit in İstanbul, March 29th. Experiences from South Korea, which sells Kimchi to other countries, Peru, which can attract global travelers from Rome and Paris to Lima, The Basque region of Spain and Denmark, which are among the World's most innovative and exciting in the field of gastronomy today.

The Summit brought together over 800 participants from domestic and international companies, NGOs, Universities and government officials.  In attendance were the Minister of Culture of Turkey, the Vice-Minister of Development of Turkey and the Mayor of Istanbul.

ditc-ted-28032018-Creative-Istanbul-group-550.jpgUNCTAD highlighted the growing importance of domestic gastronomy for exports and tourism and gastronomic tradition as an invaluable resource to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation. By leveraging gastronomic heritage, entrepreneurs in developing countries can market new concepts and scale them as viable economic activities. In so doing, the interplay between gastronomy and creativity may contribute to local innovation, and ultimately economic growth and development.

UNCTAD also met with Mr. Prof. Dr. Nazim Ekren, Rector of Istanbul Commerce University and Mr. Burhan Metin, Director of the Centre for Creative Economy at the Istanbul Commerce University to discuss joint research related activities in 2018.

UNCTAD also met with the Secretary-General of the Istanbul Development Agency, Ms. Ozgul Ozkan Yavuz to discuss possible cooperation opportunities between UNCTAD and Istanbul Development Agency.
