Trade and technology are powerful drivers of the global economy. Emergence of on-line trade is an example of trade and technological progress creating new opportunities for MSMEs to enter into the global market. But their contribution to inclusive and sustainable development does not come automatically.
At the occasion of the Financing for Development Forum 2018, eminent representatives of the multilateral process in New York and Geneva discuss how we “connect the dots”, particularly in multilateral frameworks, between trade and technology to make them more conducive to inclusive and sustainable development. Summary “Governments need to reflect the digital dimension in their development strategies to reap real benefits out of the digital economy.”
“In trade, we need UNCTAD to continue helping countries, particularly LDCs, foster their e-commerce readiness.”
H.E. Mr. Tudor Ulianovschi, President of the UNCTAD Trade and Development Board, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova.  “Digitalization is changing the way global value chains operate – help MSMEs leverage e-payment platforms and apps, then it will help them participate in value chains in a more equitable manner.”“Access and good-quality physical infrastructure are among the major challenges facing developing countries and their enterprises to benefit from on-line trade and the digital economy. Technology transfer, capacity building, and technical assistance must be provided to developing countries to enable them to benefit from the opportunities of the digital economy.”H.E. Ambassador Mohamed Edrees, Chair of the G77 in New York, Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations.  “With a clear national strategy, set the physical infrastructure right. Tanzania has finished installing fibre optic cable network across the country.”“We want everyone to benefit from digital economy and e-trade – we need to connect the dots between the government, multilateral frameworks on trade, and multi-stakeholder frameworks on internet governance.”H.E. Ambassador Modest J. Mero, Permanent Representative of the United Republic of Tanzania to the United Nations.
