An inter-agency mission will be conducted to Cotonou, Benin, from 9 to 11 June 2015 to launch the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) Tier 2 project on Strengthening of Productive and Trade Capacities of Benin.

This project will be implemented jointly by UNCTAD, the International Trade Center (ITC) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The project aims to contribute to poverty reduction by strengthening the export supply capacity through:

  1. Capacity building for the formulation and implementation of industrial policies and strategies aimed at developing and promoting competitive value chains in priority sectors.

  3. Supporting the promotion, restructuring and competitiveness enhancement for enterprises in priority sectors with high employment and export potential.

The project focuses on cotton, agro-industries and fisheries — three priorities identified in Benin's EIF-sponsored Diagnostic Trade Integration Studies (DTIS)

As part of this project, UNCTAD is in charge of the elaboration of the National Trade Policy Document and will provide technical assistance in building capacities of governmental entities, private sector and civil society and NGOs in the filed of trade integration, negotiations, rules of origin and market access. In response to an official request from the Government of Benin, additional support will be provided in the field of Geographical Indications.

The objective of the mission is for the agencies to share and discuss with the government — in particular with HE. Françoise A. ASSOGBA, Minister of Industry and Trade — their joint operational plan, and to officially launch activities.

The three agencies and the government will therefore agree on the implementation and monitoring modalities before the official ceremony on Wednesday 10 June 2015, followed by a press conference to share the an overview of the project with the public.

In addition, on the last day of the mission, the agencies will take the opportunity to meet with the main stakeholders of the project. In the case of UNCTAD, consultations with entities from the Ministry of Industry and Trade will be held.
