Second Workshop on Investigative Techniques on Competition and Consumer Protection

22 - 24 July 2015
Centro Formación de la Cooperación Española, AECID
Cartagena de Indias
, Colombia

In the framework of UNCTAD's COMPAL Programme, UNCTAD is organizing the second workshop on investigative techniques on competition and consumer protection, which will bring together officials from 12 member countries to discuss the interaction between the two fields.

UNCTAD's COMPAL Programme targets regional integration among its fifteen Latin American members on competition and consumer protection matters. A very successful initiative is to bring together high ranking officials of member agencies and those of more advanced agencies (namely, Spain, Switzerland and Canada) to discuss the investigative techniques in different areas of daily work for the agency. This event is co-organizing with the Spanish Cooperation Agency (AECID), the Spanish Authorities for Competition (CMNC) and Consumer Protection (AECOSAN) and the Colombian Competition and Consumer Protection Authority (SIC).

The Second Workshop on Investigative Techniques on Competition and Consumer Protection will be divided in three workshops for competition and three for consumer protection. The conclusions of the workshops will be shared in plenaries. The workshops will be followed by two roundtables to discuss the competition and consumer protection issues of two sectors: pharmaceuticals and retail supermarkets.

The event aims at providing a platform for competition and consumer protection agencies to discuss areas of common interest, identify synergies and exchange best practices

Participating countries are: Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Spain and Switzerland.
Expected outcomes include:
- three workshops on competition and three on consumer protection
- two roundtables: one on pharmaceuticals and one on retail supermarket.
- exchange of experiences
- identification of synergies between competition and consumer protection to tackle common problems.
