, Peru

UNCTAD's COMPAL Programme has been building Peru's capacities on competition and consumer protection issues for the last 10 years, though its governmental agency INDECOPI. Supporting INDECOPI's efforts to reach all regions in the country, UNCTAD will deliver training to local officials and university students on competition and consumer protection issues in the La Salle and San Pablo Universities of Arequipa.

INDECOPI has invited UNCTAD to provide training on competition law to its officials and university students in the San Pablo University of Arequipa. In particular, UNCTAD will deliver presentations on the principles of competition and economic law, the control of restrictive business practices and economic analysis of competition cases. This training programme intends to provide a sound introduction to the extensive competition course that will expand until 14 November, thus building local capacities and promoting a competition culture
In parallel, INDECOPI and UNCTAD will address La Salle University of Arequipa's student on the national and international protection of consumer rights. La Salle University asked UNCTAD to present the recent developments in the revision of the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection, which is expected for December 2015. Emerging issues such as e-commerce, financial services and data protection have finally been included in these non-binding high principles, potentially upgrading the protection afforded to consumers. Discussions will also address global trends in consumer protection from alternative dispute resolution to self-regulation. A special session will be devoted to INDECOPI's remarkable work on consumer protection, which has made it one of the most highly valued governmental agencies in the country.
