National Training and Capacity Building Workshop to Upgrade and Diversify the Fish exports of Uganda

27 - 29 October 2015
Conference center of the Imperial Resort Beach Hotel
Kampala/Entebbe
, Uganda

The training and capacity building workshop is part of UNCTAD's project titled: Building the capacities of selected LDCs to upgrade and diversify their fish exports.

The project aims to strengthen the institutional and human resources capacities of Least Developed Countries such as Uganda to upgrade and diversify their fish exports.

Uganda is currently at a relatively advanced stage in terms of catch fish exports and meeting key international standards. However, the country has a long way to go to realize its full potential in fisheries, especially in the area of aquaculture where it lags behind many developing countries.

The capacity building workshop and the case study undertaken by UNCTAD will, therefore, be critical in further upgrading Uganda's fish exports and building the country's capacity to sustainably meet international quality and safety standards.

More than 80 participants are expected to participate in the three-day workshop, both at the technical and policy levels. Two days will be devoted to the technical level sessions, which will allow in-depth technical discussions on the problems posed by international standards.

The policy level meeting (one day) will focus on ways and means of improving food safety and quality standards while formulating and implementing diversification policies and export promotion strategies with a focus on the fisheries sector.

Overall, the meeting is expected to mobilize senior experts and government officials (policy makers) from relevant ministries, departments (trade; agriculture and animal industry; fisheries and aquaculture; standards, health and environment) and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, fisheries associations fishermen and academic and researchers from key institutions of the country.
