UNCTAD-EIF workshop on "Identification of the measures to be undertaken in order to improve the management of the corridor between Djibouti and Ethiopia following the update of the Diagnostic Trade Integration Study (DTIS)"

24 - 25 November 2015
Djibouti
, Djibouti

Following the update validation of the Diagnostic Trade Integration Study (DTIS) of Djibouti, UNCTAD is organizing a workshop in Djibouti aiming to identify measures to improve the management of the corridor between Djibouti and Ethiopia.

The DTIS update shows that the port of Djibouti and its transport and logistic activities, is one of the main sectors in which the country has built comparative advantage. Given Djibouti’s strategic location on the Asia-Europe route, the transport chain has become one of the pillars of its economic activity and a determinant of the performance of the service sector.

The study furthermore highlights the relevance of the corridor with Ethiopia, since the port of Djibouti is its main commercial port, used to transit the integrity of its maritime trade.

Although Djibouti owns a basic infrastructure of good quality and with potential for creation of jobs, the potential gains from such infrastructure escape the local economy. The corridor between Djibouti and Ethiopia reflects this problem since a significant proportion of jobs created by transport an logistics are hold by Ethiopian operators and workers and in terms of freight, Djibouti does not even cover the amount of traffic conferred by the Djibouti-Ethiopian Joint Commission.

The target of the workshop is to provide an assessment of the operation of the above-mentioned corridor in order to identify and tackle the issues affecting trade between Djibouti and Ethiopia and to establish a road map for the improvement of trade facilitation between the two countries.
