Key Issues

This event was jointly organised by UNOHRLLS, UNCTAD, UNECA, UNECLAC, UNECE and UNDP

The Global Event consisted of two segments:

  • LLDCs´ Ministerial Meeting

  • Thematic Meeting on Trade and Trade Facilitation - as part of the preparations for the mid-term review of the Almaty Programme of Action

The Ministerial Meeting brought together ministers and high-level government officials from LLDCs and Switzerland as observer, as well as experts from international organisations. It focused on trade-related aspects of particular interest to LLDCs, such as the scope of their effective participation in world trade and LLDCs-specific topics of the Doha Round, including:

  • accession issues

  • trade facilitation

  • trade-related development assistance

The Ministerial Meeting adopted the Ulaanbaatar Declaration.

The Thematic Meeting on Trade and Trade Facilitation reviewed the implementation of the Almaty PoA in the areas of trade and trade facilitation. It was the second thematic meetings to provide inputs to the mid-term review of the implementation of the Almaty PoA scheduled for 2008.

The first thematic meeting dealt with transit transport infrastructure development in landlocked and transit developing countries and was held from 18 to 20 June 2007 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

In addition to representatives of LLDCs and international organizations, the Ulaanbaatar thematic meeting was also attended by transit developing countries and donors. It was addressed by Mongolian President Nambar Enkhbayar and Mr. Cheikh Sidi Diarra, newly-appointed Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS.

In a spirit of inter-divisional cooperation, staff members of UNCTAD´s ALDCSP, DITC and SITE Divisions participated actively in the Global Event.
