Working Group on Harmonization and Equivalence for Organic Agriculture in Asia
09 - 10 December 2010
Mumbai

Key Issues

This first meeting of the Working Group will bring together key public and private sector actors to facilitate trade in Asian organic agricultural products through south-south cooperation.

It will follow-up on proposals made by the Regional Conference in May 2010 in Shanghai to develop an Asian organic standard, determine pathways for equivalence of organic standards and certification requirements, and opportunities for public-private cooperation to create efficiencies in trade within and beyond the region.

It is being organized in the framework of the UNCTAD/FAO/IFOAM Global Organic Market Access (GOMA) project, which aims to support market access and reduce trade barriers for organic agricultural products through harmonization, equivalence and other forms of cooperation on standards and conformity assessment. A main focus of GOMA is on the rapidly developing organic sectors in East, South-East and South Asia.

This meeting is associated with BioFach India and the India Organic Seminar scheduled from 7-9 December at the Bombay Exposition Centre in Mumbai.
