The workshop targets government officials from trade and environment ministries in capitals and Geneva-based trade negotiators as well as representatives of the private sector, academia and NGOs from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. The meeting will also be attended by representatives of UN ESCAP, UNEP´s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, ADB, ASEAN and WTO.
Based on UNCTAD briefing papers and several national contributions on specific themes, the meeting will centre on the following subjects: (i) the relationship between specific trade obligations in Multilateral Environmental Agreements and WTO rules; (ii) definitions, concepts and developmental and export potential of environmental goods and services; and (iii) results of discussions on the three issues in paragraph 32 of the Doha Ministerial Declaration (i.e. the effect of environmental measures on market access, the relevant provisions of the TRIPS Agreement, and eco-labelling).
The workshop will be co-organized by the International Institute on Trade and Development (ITD), Bangkok, and the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD), London.
