An MOU was signed by UNCTAD and the Spanish Port Authority of Gijón on 29 October under which the port will fund UNCTAD´s TrainForTrade Port Training Programme in selected Latin American ports, especially in countries that belong to the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI). Activities planned for 2007-2008 under the MOU include training middle managers from ALADI port communities and translating pedagogical material into Spanish.

UNCTAD has been implementing a technical assistance programme for ALADI member countries since 2006 thanks to the financial support of Spain. The upcoming extension of the Port Training Programme to Spanish-speaking countries will be launched next March at a meeting in Valencia, Spain.
