21 Dec 07 - Women in Business Award 2008

Now that the EMPRETEC Women in Business Award 2008 has announced the 10 finalists for this year's competition, a special panel of experts will vote for the top three finalists, who will receive their prizes at a ceremony to be held in Accra (Ghana) during UNCTAD XII on 21 April 2008.

EMPRETEC
Technical experts Pierre Kunz of Genilem (Switzerland) and Piero Formica of the International Entrepreneurship Academy at Jönköping University (Sweden) offered their valuable expertise in selecting the 10 finalists from among a large group of women entrepreneurs who have benefited from the EMPRETEC programme. A pioneering UN vehicle for the promotion of entrepreneurship, EMPRETEC operates in 27 countries.

The selected women entrepreneurs own highly productive and innovative businesses ranging from small handicrafts to industrial food processing and from garments to ownership of a hotel or web portal. They also provide role models for other women, spearheading a process of cultural change in their communities. In short, women entrepreneurs in developing countries are overcoming the traditional obstacles that small businesses usually encounter.

Below are the 10 finalists:

  • Torrado Elba Rosa, Argentina
  • Medji Dédé Léa Edith, Benin
  • Paola Borges Barcellos Tucunduva, Brazil
  • Messeret Belihu, Ethiopia
  • Augustine E. Hammond, Ghana
  • Pauly Apea-Kubi, Ghana
  • Irene Bacchus, Guyana
