16 Sept 08 - Civil society hearing at the Trade and Development Board

The global food crisis and the current financial crisis will be discussed at an informal hearing between government representatives and civil society. The report of the hearing will be submitted to the Trade and Development Board at its 55th session.

UNCTAD´s hearing with civil society and the private sector will be held on 17 September from 3.00 to 6.00 p.m. and will address two issues which are high on the international agenda:

  • The global food crisis: addressing a systemic failure in development strategy
  • The global financial crisis and its impact on sustainable development

In the lead-up to the hearing, the United Nations Non-Governmental Liaison Service interviewed Mr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, to find out his views on these issues.

In preparation for the hearing, informal consultations were organized between civil society, the private sector and officials from member States. Civil society contributions (see also addendum 1) to the two themes were shared with member States and other civil society groups.

During the hearing, lead discussants from civil society and the private sector will make brief presentations, after which participants will engage in an interactive debate.

Ambassador Tomáš HUSÁK of the Czech Republic will chair the hearing. The summary report of the hearing will be presented at the closing plenary meeting of the Trade and Development Board on 26 September 2008 and will be included in the Board´s report.

To ensure effective use of time, guidelines for the participants have been drawn up detailing the organization of work, objectives and intended outcome.
