le port de Nantes Saint-NazaireA Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Geneva today between UNCTAD and the Port Authority of Nantes Saint-Nazaire. Signing on behalf of UNCTAD was Secretary-General, Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, while the Port Authority of Nantes Saint-Nazaire was represented by Mr. Jean-Pierre Chalus, CEO.

The Memorandum will make way for UNCTAD´s TrainForTrade programme to offer, in partnership with the Port Authority, more comprehensive assistance to recipient ports in developing francophone countries, through the form of technical assistance and educational seminars. So far, the programme has helped educate more than 600 port operators in countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, through 42 education cycles.

The aim of the port training programme is to strengthen the expertise of middle managers of port authorities in the network. This takes place through educational seminars, offered locally, in two-year cycles. They are given by instructors who have been trained by UNCTAD, in partnership with ports in developed countries. At the end of the training, and after a brief presentation in front of an international assessment panel, participants receive UNCTAD´s Port Certificate"Certificat Portuaire".

Representatives from several African countries already benefiting from the programme, such as Benin, Cameroon, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Senegal and Togo, attended the ceremony.

TrainForTrade is an UNCTAD programme which assists developing countries in maximizing the benefits of globalization through the development of educational capacities. It is a programme of the Division on Technology and Logistics.
