UNCTAD´s Deputy Secretary-General briefed new UN resident coordinators about UNCTAD´s activities and the work of the UN´s coordinating body on trade and development operations.
The newly appointed coordinators, who will head up all UN operations in their respective duty stations, were attending a course in Geneva to introduce them to the UN system.
UNCTAD´s contribution to the session consisted of an overview of the organization and a description of the activities of the Interagency Cluster on Trade and Productive Capacity. The presentation showed, through examples, how the Cluster coordinates at the country and regional level the operations of 13 UN agencies that provide assistance on trade and related matters.
UNCTAD Deputy Secretary-General Petko Draganov introduced a video presentation by Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi which focused on UNCTAD´s mandate and thinking on development. The video also discussed the role of trade in UN development operations.
The Cluster, a subsidiary of the UN´s Chief Executives Board, is led by UNCTAD. Its other members are UNIDO, UNDP, ITC, FAO, the WTO, the five UN regional commissions, UNEP and UNOPS.
