05 June 10 - G8 Declaration calls on UNCTAD to continue developing principles for investment in agriculture

G8-MuskokaThe G8 Muskoka Declaration calls on UNCTAD and sister agencies to continue efforts to develop principles for investment in the agricultural sector of developing countries.

The G8's Muskoka Declaration on Recovery and New Beginnings, issued after the group's Annual Summit in Muskoka, Canada, on 25-26 June, reaffirmed the commitment adopted at L'Aquila in 2009 for the G8 to work with partner countries and international organizations to develop a joint proposal on principles and best practices for international agricultural investment.

On the subject of global food security, the G8 stressed the importance of enhancing international investment in a responsible and sustainable way and called on UNCTAD to continue efforts to develop principles for investment in the agricultural sector.

The declaration also highlighted the importance of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through "truly global efforts" and stressed the importance of enabling conditions conducive to private and financial sector development and investment and resource flows.

Reflecting the key connection between cross-border investment and development and the fact that official development assistance alone is not sufficient to achieve global food security, we stress the importance of enhancing international investment in developing countries in a responsible and sustainable way.

In this context, we support continued efforts to develop principles for investment in the agricultural sector undertaken by the World Bank, regional development banks, FAO, UNCTAD, and IFAD.
