Panel to focus on Japan's regulation of technology licensing agreements

17 August 2012

A panel discussion is being organised for Monday, 3 September at the Palais des Nations in Geneva to focus on how Japan has applied competition policy in the regulation of technology licensing agreements during the post-War period.

The discussion, organised jointly by UNCTAD and the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), will draw upon a paper to be presented by Professor Hiroko Yamane of Teikyo University, looking at how intellectual property licensing terms have been examined by competition authorities in Japan, and comparing that experience with those of other countries.

Invited panellists will discuss the findings of the paper and the extent to which lessons could be drawn by developing countries for the elaboration of their own licensing policies, in view of their objectives to promote competition and technology transfer.

Panellists will include:

  • Mr. Denis Barbosa of the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro

  • Mr. Sasha Wunch-Vincent of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

  • Mr. Anthony Taubman, of the Intellectual Property Division, World Trade Organization (WTO)

  • Ms. Padmashree Gehl Sampath of UNCTAD's Division on Technology and Logistics

Due to limited space and the need to obtain security passes for entry into the Palais, pre-registration is required by COB 30 August 2012.

Those wishing to pre-register can email kiyoshi.adachi@unctad.org, or monica.adjivon@unctad.org.
