UNCTAD mandate reaffirmed in Doha

26 April 2012

The Doha Mandate, adopted by consensus today by the member States, requests that UNCTAD continue its work along the three pillars of consensus-building, policy research and technical assistance.

“UNCTAD remains the focal point in the United Nations for the integrated treatment of trade and development, and interrelated issues in the areas of finance, technology, investment and sustainable development,” reads part of the text agreed today in Doha, Qatar.

The wide-ranging 15-page text, henceforth to be known as the Doha Mandate, was agreed on by the member States during the thirteenth ministerial conference of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, which ends today. It will serve as basis for the organization’s work programme over the next four years.

The outcomes of UNCTAD XIII, termed by many participating States as "positive and forward-looking,"  reaffirm and build upon the previous mandate text of the organization adopted at its previous conference, known as the Accra Accord, which “remains valid and relevant.”

The Doha Mandate was issued on the agenda item: "Development-centred globalization: Towards inclusive and sustainable growth and development."
