In a letter dated 31 May, civil society organizations which participated at the UNCTAD XIII conference in Doha in April expressed their desire to continue the "fruitful collaboration" and to engage with UNCTAD in a variety of joint endeavours in the future.
In a letter dated 31 May, civil society organizations which participated at the UNCTAD XIII conference in Doha in April expressed their desire to continue the "fruitful collaboration" and to engage with UNCTAD in a variety of joint endeavours in the future.
A covering note from Ms. Deborah James of the Center for Economic and Policy Research based in Washington, D.C., noted the successful outcome of the Civil Society Forum at UNCTAD XIII and the reinforcement of UNCTAD's mandate for its "excellent work on globalization, the global economic crisis, macroeconomic policy, and related issues."
The joint Civil Society letter stated that civil society organizations will continue to advocate for an expanded role for UNCTAD in the global economic arena.
Several ideas were proposed for collaboration, such as the holding of joint seminars and public events on issues of shared interest, participation of civil society experts at UNCTAD events and vice versa, and shared evaluation in policy areas such as foreign direct investment and the work on trade.
The civil society organizations also looked forward to participating in future UNCTAD intergovernmental meetings, and especially hope to attend the 2012 Trade and Development Board.
