Gas exporting countries seek partnership with UNCTAD

The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is seeking accreditation as an observer inter-governmental organization with UNCTAD in order to facilitate future cooperation between the two organizations in areas of mutual interest.​

Following a meeting between UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi and Mr. Leonid Bokhanovskiy, Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) at the UNCTAD XIII Conference in Doha, Qatar, the GECF has sent an official communication to UNCTAD requesting observer status and expressing interest in developing a constructive collaboration with UNCTAD in areas of mutual interest, in particular offering its support to the future meetings of UNCTAD's Global Commodities Forum,  the Africa Oil, Gas and Minerals Trade and Finance Conference and Exhibition regularly organised by UNCTAD, and other events and activities on energy and commodities issues.
 
GECF Secretary General Leonid Bokhanovskiy underlined at the UNCTAD XIII Conference in Doha the important role of UNCTAD and its research and analytical work on topical issues of international trade and development, particularly on commodities and energy.
 
GECF seeks to build a mechanism for a more meaningful dialogue between gas producers and gas consumers for the sake of stability and security of supply and demand in global natural gas markers.
 
The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is an intergovernmental organization of 11 of the world's leading natural gas producers made up of Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela.  Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, and Norway have the status of Observer Members. The GECF is headquartered in Doha, Qatar.  GECF member states together control about 70% of the world's proven natural gas reserves.
