UNCTAD trains Palestinian Authority staff on UN system in Geneva

10 October 2012

Two staff members from the Palestinian Authority's Ministry of the National Economy have completed an UNCTAD training programme designed to familiarize them with the activities of UNCTAD and the work of other United Nations agencies in Geneva.

Mr. Jawad Almuti and Mr. Sabeeh Qarban were the third group of Palestinian Authority staff members to receive the training. The programme began three years ago, and is designed to supplement the annual training offered to Palestinian diplomats at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Geneva component is organized by UNCTAD's Assistance to the Palestinian People Unit (APPU), in collaboration with the United Nations' Division for Palestinian Rights which is based in New York.

As part of the programme, the Palestinian officials met with Mr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, Secretary-General of UNCTAD, and with Mr. Mahmoud Elkhafif, Coordinator of APPU, and Ms. Randa Jamal, Economic Affairs Officer, APPU.

During the 17 September-5 October programme, the two officials attended the fifty-ninth session of UNCTAD's Trade and Development Board. They participated, with diplomats from the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations Office at Geneva, in the Trade and Development Board's deliberations on UNCTAD's assistance to the Palestinian people. They also followed the discussions at the Trade and Development Board on globalization and interdependence; development strategies; and trade, investment and macroeconomic policies in developing countries.

As part of their introduction to the work of the other international agencies in Geneva, Mr. Almuti and Mr. Qarban attended meetings of the Human Rights Council and the World Trade Organization. In addition, they visited the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Economic Commission for Europe, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the International Labour Office, the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the International Trade Centre.
