Mobile Money for Business Development in the East African Community

Mobile money – the use of cell phones for money transfers, payments and more sophisticated financial activities such as credit, savings, and insurance – is increasingly popular in East Africa but could benefit from region-wide rules to coordinate and harmonize regulations, a new UNCTAD study says.​

UNCTAD organized a consultation last week with the Head of the Islamic Trade and Finance Corporation (ITFC) and representatives of the League of Arab States to discuss a new programme to boost trade and reduce unemployment in the Arab region.​
