Steve MacFeely, Head of Statistics and Information at UNCTAD presented a paper prepared jointly with Ms. Nour Barnat, statistical assistant at UNCTAD to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Asia-Pacific Economics Statistics Week 2017 on Monday May 22nd.

The paper entitled 'Statistical Capacity Building for Sustainable Development: Developing the fundamental pillars necessary for modern national statistical systems' argues that countries must balance the development of national statistical systems with the population of Sustainable Development Goal indicators.

The paper also stresses the importance of developing 'national data infrastructure' to ensure that countries can optimise their administrative data.
