The second annual meeting of the UNCTAD-SELA Working Group on Trade and Competition (WGTC) was held in Lima, back-to-back with the COMPAL Annual Conference

The Latin American Economic System (SELA) and UNCTAD held the second annual meeting of the WGTC from 18 to 19 June 2012, thanks to the participation of more than 20 countries represented by trade ministries as well as competition authorities.

The annual meeting addressed the following topics:

First, during the High-Level Segment dedicated to ministers and high-level officials from Trade and Competition Authorities, participants reflected on how competition clauses of regional trade integration agreements contribute to reinforce the effectiveness of national competition authorities.

Second, sessions were held in order to discussed the findings of the reports on the work carried out during the period 2011-2012 by Working Sub-Group 2 (legal instruments related with competition and bilateral, regional and multilateral trade, under the coordination of Chile) and Sub-Group 4 (research and sectoral studies, coordinated by Panama).

Third, additional sessions dealt with major issues such as Public procurement, competition and trade -- Cross-border anti-competitive practices: Challenges for emerging and developing economies, and on the needs for technical assistance and bilateral, sub-regional and multilateral cooperation among trade and competition institutions in the region.
