Monitoring the implementation of the SDGs: The role of big data

Steve MacFeely, Head of Statistics and Information, spoke at the expert panel session on 'Innovative data approaches for measuring progress on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls' at the 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62) on Friday, 16 March in New York. His talk entitled 'Monitoring the implementation of the SDGs: The role of big data' outlined the opportunities and challenges that big data might present to compiling SDG indicators and official statistics more generally.

In particular, he discussed the governance issues that National Statistical Systems will need to be taken seriously if they are to use big data.
