Ms. Anne Miroux, Director of the UNCTAD's Division on Technology and Logistics, met with Mr. Álvaro Augusto Soares Paixão Junior, Angolan Secretary of State for Trade, Angola, to discuss the possibility of running a second TrainForTrade Project project for Angola.
Ms. Miroux held a meeting with Angola's Secretary of State for Trade in the presence of Dr. Lukonde Luansi, Minister Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Angola in to the United Nations in Geneva, and Trade Representative in Switzerland and to the WTO, ; Mr. Adriano Alves Martins, National Director of Foreign Trade for Angola's Ministry of Commerce, ; and Mr. Agostinho Antönio Antonio dos Santos, Director of the Office of Secretary of State of Angola's Ministry of Commerce, in order to discuss the opportunity forpossibilities for a second TrainForTrade (TFT) project for Angola.
The UNCTAD/TrainForTrade programme received funding from the European Commission to implement a technical assistance project in Angola between 2007 and 2011. The project focused on strengthening the knowledge and skills of Angolan public officers and private managers on trade-related issues that national stakeholders had identified as a prioritiesy. The project's activities were developed around six components: Modern Port Management, International Investment, Competition and Consumer Protection, Energy and Environment, Trade Policies, and Sustainable Tourism for Development.
During their meeting with Ms. Miroux, the Secretary of State affirmed that the Ministry of Commerce's was had been highly satisfied with by the results of the first TrainForTrade project, and conveyed the interest of the Ministry to reinforcethe Ministry's interest in reinforcing the partnership between UNCTAD and the Government of Angola through a new TrainForTrade project. The Secretary of State indicated that the new Minister of Commerce, Ms. Rosa Escórcio Pacavira de Matos, has had been in contact with the European Commission to request a second TrainForTrade II project for Angola.
