04 June 2013

"The UNCTAD Public Forum is a great place for like-minded development and public-interest advocates to share analysis, debate policy, and map out new and creative methods for achieving our common goals." Deborah James

Given the importance of the upcoming ninth WTO Ministerial in Bali, the Our World Is Not For Sale (OWINFS) network is pleased to participate in this important event - looking at trade and investment from a development perspective.
Ms. Deborah James
Director, International Programs at the
Center for Economic and Policy Research

Ms. James, Representative of Our World Is Not For Sale Network, and Director of International Programmes at the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, D.C., will discuss, together with other speakers, Protecting Policy Space for Development: Corporate Globalization and the World Trade Organization, on the second day of the Symposium (25 June).

Ms. James is Director of International Programmes at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) in Washington, D.C., a non-partisan think tank that works on domestic and international economic issues, focusing on macroeconomic policy as well as the housing market, social security, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and political and economic relations between the United States and Latin America. There, she organizes the global campaign to stop the expansion of the World Trade Organization (WTO), with the global network Our World Is Not For Sale.

In addition, Ms. James works on issues relating to the global crisis and the IMF, and on United States foreign policy towards Latin America in an era of increasing Latin American independence. Previous to CEPR, she was Director of the WTO Programme at Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch.

Ms. James has also served as the first Executive Director of the Venezuela Information Office in Washington, D.C., an organization that reframed public debate of the progressive social transformation happening under Hugo Chávez's leadership and successfully shifted United States foreign policy towards the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Ms. James worked for more than a decade at Global Exchange, where she developed the first national campaigns to promote fair trade in the coffee industry. There, she also played a key role in the hemispheric movement to stop expansion of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to the rest of Latin America via the now-derailed Free Trade Area of the Americas. She has led over 20 human rights, democracy, fair trade, and women's delegations to Afghanistan, Brazil, Costa Rica, China, Cuba, Haiti, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mexico, Nicaragua, South Africa, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

She has written numerous articles and makes regular media appearances in English and Spanish on these issues, and has appeared on CNN en Español, the Voice of America, CNN International, and the O'Reilly Factor, among other news outlets. She graduated cum laude in Psychology and Women's Studies from the University of California at San Diego, and holds a Master's in International Policy and Planning from George Washington University.
