Services exports grew by 11% globally in 2011, but almost stagnated in Africa

According to preliminary estimates by UNCTAD and WTO, in 2011, world services exports rose by 11%, compared to 10% increase from the year before. ​

According to preliminary estimates by UNCTAD and WTO, in 2011, world services exports rose by 11%, compared to 10% increase from the year before. During 2011, transition economies’ and developing countries’ total exports of services expanded at a pace greater than the world average, with the exception of the African region, which marked a very modest estimated growth of 0.3%.

The exports of the two main services categories, transport and travel, augmented by 8.5 and 12% respectively in 2011. This represented a considerable slowdown in transport exports, especially in developing Asia and Africa, after the significant recovery of 2010 (+15.3%). On the other hand, world travel exports accelerated in 2011, most notably in developed and transition economies, with only North Africa recording a drop in this domain.
