Globalization and Development

Through its programme on Globalization and Development Strategies, UNCTAD contributes to the international debate on globalization and the management of its consequences for developing countries. The programme promotes policies at the national, regional and international level that are conducive to stable economic growth and sustainable development. It regularly examines the trends and prospects in the world economy, undertakes studies on the requirements for successful development strategies and on the debt problems of developing countries.

It also provides technical support to developing countries in their efforts to integrate into the international financial system and to manage their external debt

22 dic 2010 - Multi-stakeholder participation in the Working Group on Internet Governance

At its first meeting on 17 December, the composition of the Working Group on the Internet Governance Forum was agreed, as follows: twenty-two Members States, plus five representatives each from civil society; the business sector; academia and the technical community; and intergovernmental organizations.

Blogging in the Huffington Post of 29 April 2012, Ms. Deborah James, Director, International Programs, at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) in Washington, D.C., who was a key participant at the Civil Society Forum at UNCTAD XIII in Doha, Qatar, posted an account of the negotiations leading up to the adoption of the Doha Mandate at UNCTAD XIII.

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution (A/RES/66/184), the CSTD will hold an open, interactive meeting on enhanced cooperation on public policy issues pertaining to the Internet on 18 May 2012, in Geneva, Switzerland.

28 jul 2011 - ECOSOC takes note of LDC-IV and extends appreciation for related Turkish initiatives

Upon recommendation of CSTD-14, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) took note of the outcome of the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC-IV) held in Istanbul in May 2011, and extended its appreciation to the Turkish Government for its initiative to set up an International Science, Technology, and Innovation Center.

06 may 2012 - Gas exporting countries seek partnership with UNCTAD

The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is seeking accreditation as an observer inter-governmental organization with UNCTAD in order to facilitate future cooperation between the two organizations in areas of mutual interest.

10 may 2012 - UNCTAD S-G in Chongqing, China for conference on sustainable development and corporate responsibility

Attending the second Liangjiang Forum in Chongqing, China, 11 - 13 May 2012, UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi urged China, in light of the changing global environment, to continue to adjust its development strategy towards one based on domestic demand and the spreading of growth benefits more evenly among the regions.

13 may 2012 - UNCTAD takes chair of UN group on information society

At a meeting convened today during the WSIS Forum 2012 in Geneva, UNCTAD took over the role as Chair of the United Nations Group on the Information Society (UNGIS). UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi thanked the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), and its Secretary-General, Dr Hamadoun Touré, for excellent stewardship of UNGIS during the past 12 months.
